LEGISLATOR’S DEATH.
THE HON. C. A. C. HARDLONG PUBLIC SERVTCIi. By • Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. When the House resumed this evening, Mr. Massey rose and impressively stated that it was with deep regret that. he had to announce that the Hon. C. A. C. Hardy, who was a member of tho Legislative Council, and formerly • member of the House of Representatives, had passed away that evening. Mr. Massey described the public services of the late member, and paid a warm tribute to his memory. He described him as a good father, a good citizen, and a good friend, and trusted that he who tempers the wind to. the shorn lamb would be with his widow and family in their bereavement. He moved the usual motion of sympathy and of condolence with the family of deceased. This was seconded by Mr. T» K. Sidey, who said Mr. Hardy had grown grey in the service of the country, and during those years he had won the respect and esteem of every member of both Houses. The motion was feelingly supported by other members, and the motion wM carried. Feeling reference to the death of Mr. Hardy wae also made in the Legislative Council, which adjourned till to-morrow morning. The«late Mr. Hardy was born in Ireland on September 23, 1843, and he arrived in Dunedin in 1863. He was attracted to the Nelson goldfields in 1868, and later settled in Canterbury, where for 28 years he took a prominent part in local body work, being actively engaged in education. For ten years he was a member of the North Canterbury Education Board. He was elected M.P. for Selwyn in 1899. and represented that electorate in Parliament, until it was abolished. He was then elevated to the Legislative Council, where he occupied a seat until his death.
