INSULT TO MAGISTRATE.
MAN AIRS OLD GRIEVANCE. RESISTS WHEN ARRESTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. At the Police Court, to-day, before two justices, George Smith was charged on two counts with using obsence language to the magistrate (Mr. Mosely). Smith was previously annoyed and insulted the magistrate, while fie resisted the police on being arrested. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on the latter charge, the magistrate accepting an apology for a personal insult and abuse. On the last two Saturdays Mr. Mosely was accosted by accused, who used objectionable language. The justices emphasised the gravity of the charge and ordered him to find surety in £5O to keep the peace, or go to prison for 12 months. Smith, who is a laborer on the wharf, said he had no chance of finding the surety, and he was given 24 hours to do so. The trouble originated about two years ago, when Smith’s son was fined for military defaulting.
