A WONDERFUL LIFEBOAT.
MOST POWERFUL AFLOAT. ENGINE WORKS SUBMERGED. Novelties of many kinds have been introduced into the newest motor-lifeboat afloat built for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The Barnett Twin Screw is the name of the new boat, which is larger and far more powerful than any so far built. Tn it are embodied many new devices for saving life. It is fitted with a specially designed lifeboat engine. Practically unsinkable, the Barnett Twin Screw has as many water-tigjrt compartments as a modem battle-cruiser. Her radium of action is anything up to 150 miles, which is twice as great as that of any other lifeboat. She carries a life-saving net, a line-throwing gun, and a searchlight, and wherever possible mechnical power has been introduced. Her engines are two of the new sixcylinder 75 h.p. motors which have been specially designed by the experts of the institution. For the future engines of this type will be used in all the motorlifeboats. One of the most remarkable things about the engine is that it will continue working even when entirely submerged. This wonderful engine embodies the institution’s motor lifeboat experience of 15 years, apd its controls enable it to be handled as easily as a motor-car. The starting gear, is not dependent on outside batteries or bottles of compressed air, but consists of an ordinary bicycle motor. All working parts, ignition details, and other items that might be affected by damp, rust or dirt are enclosed in a water-tight cover, so that the engine is spray-proof.
