THE STATE ORCHESTRA.
ITS FATE IN THE BALANCE. Sydney, August 16. The fate of the New South Wales State Orchestra has been hanging in the balance for six months or more. It would appear that Mr. Verbruggen’s magnificent achievements after two years of work in building up an orchestra, which challenged comparison with the finest in the world, will probably be undone by his six months’ absence abroad. The directors of the guarantee fund—the guarantee ran out about the time when the conductor asked for six months’ extra leave—have made it perfectly clear that/Tt is impossible to carry on in the present circumstances, and a poll of shareholders is being taken on their recommendation that the fund should be wound up voluntarily. The recommendation, it is expected, will be adopted. It will then remain, if the orchestra is to continue its existence, for some workable scheme to be brought forward, which will induce subscribers to renew their support.
