THE TASMAN SEA.
NEW NAME PROPOSAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, August 22. Apropos of the difficulty in connection with renaming the Tasman Sea Anzac Sea. a shipping expert suggests the only procedure seems to be to send a letter to all the nations asking them to observe the altered name after a certain date. Sydney, August 24. Mr. K. R. Cramp, honorary secretary of the Royal Australian Historical Society, states that his council recently declined a request to support the proposal to change the name of the Tasman Sea to Anzac, as it is considered that, whilst all honor should be given to the Anzacs, it should not be given by dishonoring the memory of one of Australia’s greatest discoverers. In any case it would be a l»td precedent, as a future generation might substitute the new name for yet another. Furthermore, a change would constitute an ungracious breach of national etiquette. Britain previously resented attempts by the French and German cartographers to substitute new names for New Britain, New Ireland and other places. Now a request is made to wipe out the name of the Dutch navigator Tasman, whose name, like Anzac, is also full of significance to both coun- ' tries, inasmuch as he discovered the waterway between them.
