Members of the disbanded State Orchestra have decided to form a New South Wales symphony orchestra to operate on business lines. Mr. Skal■ski has been appointed conductor. RUSSIAN PRINCESS STORY. Sydney, August 23. Mr. Salmon, registrar of the Conservatorium, denies that Princess Olga held a position on the staff. If she did she was most effectively disguised . QUEENSLAND STOCK RETURNS. Brisbane, August 23. The stock returns show substantial increases in all classes of cattle by over half a million, sheep 998,000, and pigs 41,000 compared with the previous year. TOTALISATOR BILL. Sydney, August 23. In the Assembly the Totalisator Bill was introduced as a non-party measure. CENSURE MOTION DEFEATED. Adelaide, August 23. The censure motion was defeated by 25 votes to 14. VOTING BY PROXY. Brisbane, August 23. In the Assembly proxy voting came into force. Mr. Theodore acted for three members of the Government. The Opposition protested against the action as unworthy of the Premier of a State. SYDNEY’S LORD MAYOR. Sydney, August 23. The civic deadlock has partly ended as the result of the Lord Mayor’s minute urging investigation of the City Surveyor’s department, being carried. The division resulted in 1.3 votes each way and the Lord Mayor gave his casting vote. Four Civic Reform aidermen voted with the Labor Party. It is understood that Mr. McElhone will not now resign. FEDERAL SUGAR INQUIRY. Sydney, August 23. Mr. Deane, secretary to the Prime Minister, giving evidence before the Federal sugar inquiry, said that had Ihe Commonwealth accepted the suggestion contained in the letter from William Davies, the agent, who at the time had returned from Java, a saving would have been effected of nearly a quarter of a million. Alfred Mathews, b, former partner of Davies, said he had ascertained that sugar sold through Davies amounted to £756.600. When Davies returned, to Australia he possessed £32,000 in hard cash. Davies received 30s pel- ton profit as well as brokerage.
