DRIED MILK INDUSTRY.

PROSPECTS FOR NEW SEASON. IMPROVED MARKET CONDITIONS. The dried milk industry, which., three or four years ago was confidently expected to take a leading place -in dairying activities in the Auckland Province, but which hitherto has not fulfilled, expectations, is still claiming considerable attention in the Waikato district. Market conditions in regard to the product are said to have improved considerably of late, both in Britain and America, and the prospects of establishing the industry on an equally profitable basis with other branches of dairying, have assumed a brighter aspect. The Auckland Herald’s Te Awamutu correspondent states that an important departure in connection with the dried milk industry in the Waikato is the arrival of Mr. G. P. Smith, an expert from California, under engagement to the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., to take charge of the whole of the process work in connection with this industry. The Te Awamutu factory will reopen on September 1, and it is considered that advices from London are such as to justify the hope that good payable prices will rule for a-. long time to come, with an expanding business as the value of the product becomes better known in Britain. At present orders are in sight for 2500 tons of powder, this alone being 600 tons in excess of last year’s total production. The Cambridge correspondent of the Auckland Herald states that the chairman of the Cambridge Co-operative Dairy Companv. Mr. Mervyn Wells, has learned from a reliable American source, under date June 28, that there had been a derided change in the market for skim powder. Miscellaneous brands of good spray process, which were selling a ween, prior to the above date at 8 cents were then held at 9 cen-ts. and there were bids of 8% cents wholesale. One of the leading manufacturers had advanced the price on one of his brands 1 cent, and others were contemplating some readjustment in prices. The demand had improved and since jobbers had been very lightly stocked the increasing call had affected the wholesale trading very promptly, resulting in the firmness.
