Humphrey, Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left with him. SPREAD OF WEEDS. August 23. Some time ago correspondence passed between the Stratford A. and P. Association and the Agricultural Department with reference to the spread of noxious weed« on the abandoned soldiers’ farms in the Croydon soldiers’ settlement. The A. and P. Association pointed out that weeds, especially ragwort, were spreading unchecked over the settlement, and asked the department to do something towards checking the spread. The secretary of the association has now been informed by the department that the Minister of Lands has approved of the expenditure of £25 in clearing ragwort from the sections lately occupied by Messrs. Smith and Cox. The local inspector of stock has been instructed to have this amount expended to the best advantage at the proper season. GENERAL ITEMS. Lovers of good entertainment, with a wee Scotch flavor, will have pleasant i ecoliections of the concert and ball given by the Taranaki Provincial Scottish Society at Stratford last year. This season’s function will be held in the Town Hall on Thursday, August 31, and, judging by the programme drawn up a greater success even than that of last year may be expected. At the inquest into the death of Mr. Albert Walker the jury recommended that the owner of the buildings in which Mr. Penn’s offices are situated should be advised that a hand-rail on the stairs would be a convenience. The buildings do not belong to Mr. Penn, but to }lr. F. S. Veale, of Cambridge. At W. H.
