TAHORA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On August 17 the annual meeting of the Tahora Settlers’ Association was held in the Tahora Public School, there being a good attendance. Mr. W. L. Kennedy (president of the association) presided. . Messrs. W. L. Kennedy and W. Kerr were re-elected president and secretary respectively. The association decided to join kindred associations in urging a reduction in the present land values, existing valuations being considered far too high. Owing to the slump, the association thought the time was not opportune to raise a loan of £2500 for a crushing plant and other material. The association discussed the great loss caused to settlers by wiki pigs. The Government is at present laying poison to destroy the pigs, but it remains to be seen whether or not this method will be effective. It was decided that immediate steps he taken to secure a cemetery site for Tahora. Plans of the district are to be secured and an Inspection made to find out the most suitable available site. At present the train accommodation between Kohuratahi and Te Wera is quite inadequate. The association decided to ask the district traffic manager to have the spare carraiges left at Kohuratahi instead of at Te Wera. It was decided to ask the Kohuratahi Association to co-operate in the matter. When the association are dealing with this matter it would be a good thing if they could get the Government to put a carriage on the public works train. The annual ball is to be held about the end of September. A strong committee was set up to make the necessary arrangements. The association voted £2 2s to Mr. W. Kerr as a small recognition of his valuable services to the association. It also granted a small donation to the School Committee for the loan of the school for the meeting of the association. On Saturday, August 26, a /unction is to be held in connection with the opening of the tenr's season.” OKATO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of suppliers was held at Okato and Puniho factory on August 16 to form a edw-testing association, Mr. T. E. Larking being in the chair. Mr. Fulton attended and gave a very interesting address on the subject of cow testing. It was arranged that Mr. W. Ogle’s services be engaged to carry out the testing at two shillings per cow. Messrs. Wooldridge and W. Guy were requested to interview the directors for the use of testing apparatus, acids, etc., for which the directors have kindly given consent. The secretary of the company
has since been requested to place orders for bottle outfits for four hundred cows. We hope to have testing in full swing by September. Any other suppliers wishing to join in this movement should send in their names as soon as possible. RAHOTU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At the last euchre party and dance here, Mr. and Miss Buttle, of New Plymouth, won the lady’s and gentlemen’s prize. They are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. Chapman. The Methodist choir held a concert last week, the singing and musical items, especially the quartettes, being very much appreciated, ■ the voices blending so nicely. Those who did not go missed a treat. The married men played the single boys at football here last Wednesday, the single proving victorious by 11 to 6. Some of the best married players were unable to take part in the game. In the evening an enjoyable social was held, being fairly well attended. A new social, called a “sock social.” took place on Friday evening in the hall supper room. Over 150 sox were sent out. The little sox filled a big gum boot and return'd about £4 10s towards the funds for building a new vicarage at Opunake. Supper was provided. Last Thursday. 17th. was one of the warmest days felt here this winter, being as hot as any summer day. Mr. and Mrs. A. Chapman are visiting relations at Tarata. The Rahotu twins are home and both quite The phone is on most houses, and a general “ring up” is going on among the young folk.
