INGLEWOOD.

A FORWARD STEP. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The decision arrived at by the meeting of farmers held on Thursday, 14th init., at the Parish Hall to make a determined effort towards reviving a local branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union should meet with the approval of everyone in this district. The meeting wa? addressed by Mr. F. Mills (provincial pTTudent). and Mr. G. H. Buckeridge (secretary and organiser), both of whom pointed out the value to the farming community of the organisation, and gave many examples of the good work it had done in protecting producers’ interests, encouraging co-operation and combination, as well as by helping to make the young folk take a keener and more intelligent interest in the various branches of work incidental to farm life, so that their daily routine became pleasurable instead of irksome. They also emphasised that the union is not a party-politi-cal combine, nor aims to become such, while at the same time its executive closely watches all political action that is likely in any way to affect the farmers’ interests. Each gentleman laid stress on the importance' of making the union as strong, numerically and financially. as possible. The action of the meeting in resolving to make a concerted effort is at least encouraging, but those who take a lively interest in the movement must be prepared to meet « strange spirit of indifference. The farmer is a hard man to awaken to any but his most immediate and obvious interests, though when once thoroughly aroused he is an ear-

nest and tireless worker, and therein lies the hope for the Inglewood branch. Once formed, with live and enthusiastic leaders, more especially in the persons ■of the chairman, secretary and executive committee, a great deal of good work should be accomplished in this district. and the whole community will benefit.
