TRADE WITH GERMANY.
FIRST CONSIGNMENTS ARRIVE IN MELBOURNE. Melbourne, August 5. The first consignment of German merchandise to reach Melbourne since the lifting of the trade embargo on August 1, was brought here yesterday by the Cunard-Australasian steamer Port Curtis. The vessel, which is a unit of a fleet trading regularly to Australia, left Hamburg on June 8 last, first for London and thence for Melbourne direct. The consignments shipped at Hamburg by this vessel are small. The fact appears to indicate that German merchants are feeling their way in regard to the resumption of trade with the Commonwealth, and are testing public feeling as to resumption of trade. Altogether about 250 tons of genera] merchandise were loaded for Australia, a.nd 300 tons of manures are being carried to Sydney. At Melbourne only about 40 tons of German goods will be discharged. Included in the manifest are the following entries: Nineteen cases hollow glass. Two cases auto, lamps. Six cases optical instruments. Three cases dolls. Nine cases knitting machinery.
Several other vessels have left Hamburg for Australia or are listed to do so shortly. The first German liner will be the Hanau, due here about the end of next month. The Holland-Australia steamer Aagtekerk, from Rotterdam and Hamburg, is expected to-morrow.
