PRISONER ATTEMPTS ESCAPE. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Auckland, August 22. James Harold O’Brien, a prisoner at Mount Eden Gaol, attempted to escape while working in the quarries. Two warders gave chase as O’Brien disappeared over the bank. He was recaptured about 250 yards from the prison grounds after being twice fired upon as he refused to halt when challenged. He was brought before Mr. Poynton, S.M., and ordered 14 days bread and water.
