I ’ ACCUSED GIVEN PROBATION. ■ By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch. August 22. ■ Chas Francis Riley, aged 28. who was r convicted in the Supreme Court of making a false document and therebv comi mitting forgerv in connection with a ► cheque for £BOO, was brought up for sentence. Counsel for prisoner made a’ strong appeal for leniency on the grounds of war service and the fact that prisoner .was still suffering from the effect of wounds and she!! shock. Mr. Justice Adam- 3 , in admitting prisoner to probation for three years, said the recommendation to merev by the jury must be taken into consideration. He also remarked that he thought ft was time four years after the war, that the court ceased to hear aoout the war services of prisoners charged >rith serious crimes
