ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
FATAL CART ACCIDENT. By Telegraph -Press Association. Napier, August 21. An accident which resulted in the death of a returned soldier. John Alexander Strachan, aged 29 years, occurred at Taradale on Saturday night. Deceased was driving a horse in a spring cart. The horse took fright and backed the cart into a ditch in wh'ch there was a_ foot of. water.* Deceased was thrown out into 4 the ditch and the horse fell on top of him. Several minutes elapsed before deceased could be extricated and first aid was applied without success. KILLED BY A TREE. Wanganui. August 21. Frederick Leighton, aged 44, a married man, was killed yesterday. He was watching two friends fall a tree at Aramoho. when it struck another tree and fell on him. Deceased leaves a wife and four children. OLD LADY ASPHYXIATED. Auckland, August 21. Mrs. Margaret Odium, aged 74, was found dead at her residence yesterday. The coroner found that death was due to asphyxiation caused by an accidental escape of coal gas. Presumably deceased went to bed not knowing a gas jet was partially turned on.
