NUMBERS ON HOUSES.

POSITION IN NEW PLYMOUTH. “FAR BEHIND THE NEEDS.” The numbering of houses in New Plymouth was referred to by the borough manager in his monthly report to the council last night. Mr. Bellringer, stated:— “Several years ago a start wa# made with the numbering of houses in the borough. A number of streets were properly mapped out and house numbers put up by the occupiers. The streets mapped out were as follows: Barrett, Brougham, Currie, Courtenay, Devon, Fillis. Gill, Gilbert, Hine, Leach, Liardet, Molesworth, Moturoa, Pendarves, Powderham, Queen, Silver, South Road, St. Aubyn, end two plans with different numbers for Vivian, Wallace and Young. These, however, comprise only a small proportion of the many streets in the borough, and even in regard, to most of them revision is necessary owing to the number of sub-divisions of land made since the plane were prepared. “Altogether, in the matter of house numbering, New Plymouth is far behind the needs of a town of its ?ize. I would therefore recommend that steps be taken to revise the present plans and to have plans prepared for houss numbering in all streets where the population warranto it. As soon as this has been done a supply of house numbers should be purchased and the by-laws in regard to the matter strictly enforced.”
