THE HIGH SCHOOLS.
MEETING OF THE BOARD. The New Plymouth High Schools Board met last night. Present: Messrs. J. S. Fox (chairman), H. Trimble, W. H. Atkinson, A. E. Washer and L. A. Nolan. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. L. C. Sladden, S. G. Smith, E. P. Webster, A. Morton and Dr. Fookes. It was decided to accept the lowest tender received for painting the old boardinghouse. It was decided to again approach the Public Trustee with regard to a loan not exceeding £2OOO for the erection of two extra class-rooms at the Boys’ High School. A special vote was carried extending to Mr. S. G. Smith the board’s hearty thanks for his efforts in recovering certain funds believed to have been lost. The question of junior high schools was deferred to a later meeting. A hearty vote of thanks was tendered to Mr. W. W. Smith for his comprehensive report on future improvements and planting to be carried out round the boys’ school. In this connection Mr. J. Wood’s appointment as ground caretaker was confirmed. Miss Mclntosh (principal of the Girls’ High School) submitted a report, which stated the roll numbers were now 155 and 42 respectively. The secondary school inspectors, ■ Messrs. Drummond and Parr, visited the school on August 1 and 2, to examine candidates for junior free places. Mr. Parr suggested various alterations and additions to the science-room, apparatus and equipment, which would allow more room for pupils in working and also space for storing apparatus.
