OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) During the past week several social functions were held. The Opunake Football’s Club’s ball was an enjoyable affair, and the supper (donated by the ladies) was excellent. The music was provided by Messrs. W. D. Richards (piano), J. Humphries (cornet), and M. Brophy (violin). On Friday evening Mr. Roy Ifwerson was farewelled by his many friends at a smoke social, which was held in the supper room of the Town Hall. The guest was presented with a traveller’s companion. The president of the football cluh (Mr. F. Julian) made the presentation. Mr. Ifwerson suitably replied. The ladies are organising mart sales in order to raise funds for erecting a fence round the hospital grounds.
The power board has accepted the tender by D. Trotter and J. Hollaia for removal of earth at. the hydro-electric dam at 3d per yard. Mr. A. Hickman was the successful tenderer for procuring boulder stone. Mr. G. E. Baylis was re-appointed chairman of directors of the Opunake Dairy Company. The directors elected for the ensuing year are: Messrs. G. Baylis, W. Wau, F. Carter, W. L. F. Chambers, J. Humphries, and M. Hickey. The company had a very good season, and is one of the very few factories that consistently manufactured butter.
The local general rates this year are "d in the £ in Opunake and 2%d in the cou- y.
The advance working gang on the Opunake railway have reached Patlki Road. The work that is being done is of a light description. Bf the way, it is stated that the railway line at Waiteaka Road will go through a settler’s dining room.
The harbor board is not much heard of late, but that does not mean that they are not a live body. At the last meeting, correspondence showed that the chairman is feeling the financial pulse with a view of putting In a claim for Opunake when the opportunity is right. Under present circumstances the board is doing the right thing by making haste slowly.
The adjourned meeting of the Town Board was held on Monday evening. Mr. P. Burton, in the absence of Mr. Trotter, presided. The other members present were: Messrs. A. Richards and T. N. Watt.
A number of owners of property who have recently erected new buildings have lodged objections to the new valuations. The ValuerGeneral's office has arranged with the valuer to adjust the objections.
The owners of town sections under the board’s old terms have not taken advantage of the board’s new and more liberal terms to surrender old leases for renewal. When the terms are better known they will probably do so. Accounts amounting to £ll2 were passed for payment. The next meeting will be the last on of the board. A summary of the financial position of the board could advantageously be made public.
The Opunake Ladies’ Hockey Club team met and defeated a team of ladies from Pihama by 2 points to nil. It was an evenly played contest. The Pihama team has a number of promising players. A return game will be played at an early date.
