DAMAGES GO TO CHARITY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Suva. August 19. A libel action brought by two prominent citizen, Mr. H. M. Scott, K.C., and Sir Maynard Hed«strom against the Council of Planters has occupied the court for the past four days and resulted in the jury returning a unanimous verdict for £2OO and costs. The jury added a. rider that they would not give heavier damages because plain tigs did not press their claim, also that the time was inopportune. The libel was contained in an article written by the secretary of the Council of Planters in May last, stating that plaintigs forced a discontinuance of a local steamer service to serve their own ends. Plaintixs are members of the Executive and Legislative Councils of the colony. The case caused tremendous interest* locally. The damages awarded are being given to charity.”
