THE DAVIS CUP.

THE FINAL DECIDED. I AUSTRALIA DEFEATS SPAIN. CONCLUDING GAMES WON. By Telegraph.—Pres? Asan.—Copyrlgbi New York, August 18. In the doubles the Australians defeated the Spaniards, 6—3, 6 —4. In the first set Patterson’s service was fast and untouched,, and the second set served still further to show that the Australians were the better doubles players, though Alonzo was unrivalled for covering the court. Gomar was distinctly the weakest of the four. Patterson’s service was too much for his opponents. In the last set they made a little better showing, winning the firSt game and then the fourth and fifth in succession. Batterson hi. everything hard, and the ball sometimes could hardly be seen owing to its speed. The Spaniards also secured the seventh game, but that was the end of their success. In the last game Patterson served two double faults, permitting his opponent to work up to deuce. He then served two aces, taking the match. THE FINAL SINGLES. TWO EASY VICTORIES. Received 2O, 5.5 p.m. New York, 19. O’Hara V". od defeated Gomar, 6—B, 3—6, 6—o, 6—4, 6—l. In the first set of the Wood-Gomar match both played not over speedily, and the set went 14 games jefore it was decided. In the next set Gomar played perfect tennis, but Wood was strangely wild and appeared troubled by his arm, while his face was strained by weariness. Wood steadied remarkably in the third set, winning the first three games on volley placements. Gomar tired, his service was stingless, and he was frankly anxious for a rest; but in the fourth set he covered the court splendidly, recovering some hard shots. Wood played steadily. In the fifth set Gomar won the first and third games, but tired, while Wood seemed refreshed, covering the court and freely hitting returns hard he took the other games easily. Patterson defeated Alonzo, B—6,8 —6, 6—2, 6—L. The Australians thus defeated the Spaniards. Australia will now meet the United States (the holders) in the challenge round.
