The railway executive and the strike leaders are meeting in New York to-day to endeavor to reach a settlement. Violence has broken out in various parts of the country. The troops at Joliet, Illinois, were fired on. Martial law may be restored at Clinton, Illinois, in. consequence of armed clashes between the strikers and strike-breakers. Non-union men were badly beaten at Cedar Rapids, lowa, and at Janesville, Wisconsin. At Philadelphia the anthracite miners are conferring with the owners and it is understood an agreement has practically been reached whereby 155,000 workers will return to the mines. President Harding announces that he has postponed his message to Congress, pending the outcome of the conferences called for this week.
