STEAMER DECLARED “BLACK.” By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, August 17. As the result of the recent dispute about the reduction of the wages of men engaged, on the Tuianekai and the action of the Marine Department in signing on a permanent crew, the ship has been declared black by the Seamen’s Union. The men have joined the ship at a reduction on the old wages of £1 per month, and the action is strongly resented by the union. CHARGE AGAINST ACCOUNTANT. Hastings, August 17. Montague Thomas Sabine Pasley, accountant for Hoad ley, Son and Stevart, merchants and auctioneers, appeared this morning charged with stealing £76, the property of the firm. He was remanded, on bail till Monday next. It is understood other charges are pending. HELP RECOGNISED. Auckland, T.ast Night. The rescue by H.M.S. Chatham of a portion of the crew from the wreck of the American schooner Columbia River on Sunday Island on October 3, 1921, was officially recognised on behalf of the American President on the Chatham prior to her departure for the islands. Commodore Hotham was presented with a gold watch and chain inscribed. “From the President,” Surgeon Lieut.-Comman-der Patterson with a pair of binoculars, and Gunner Taylor and Able Seaman Oliver with gold medals. The American Consul made the, presentations. SUICIDE. OF BOOTMAKER. Christchurch. Last Night. John Cranstone, a bootmaker, cut his throat at Little River last night, and then jumped into a creek. At an inquest a verdict was returned of suicide while .temporary of unsound mind.
