CLASH IN MINE-FIELDS.
TROUBLE IN NOVA SCOTIA. TROOPS SENT TO' SCENE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. 'Received August 17, 9.40 p.m. Ottawa, August 17. As a result of a clash between pickets of striking coal miners at Glace Bay. Nova Scotia, and volunteers to man the pumps several .persona were injured. The strikers were victorious and the mine officials were compelled to work the pumps themselves. The Minister of Defence (Mr. Graham) sent a detachment of several hundred troops to the scene of the disturbance upon a request from the mine officials. The Minister of Labor (Mr. Murdock) telegraphed to Mr. Lewis (president of the United Mine Workers of America) asking him to appeal to the Nova .Scotia miners to return to the pumps and continue negotiations with the Empire Steel Corporation, which owns the mines. The strike, which, occurred on Monday over a reduction in wages, appeared* to be of insignificant proportions •until the miners deserted the pumps. Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
