PERSONAL.

Dr. John Guthrie senr., one of the oldest medical practitioners in Christchurch, died yesterday., aged 75. His two sons, John and Neil, are both well known Christchurch medical men.—Press Association. The Rev. Hoani Parata, vicar of the parochial district of Riverton, has been appointed to the cure of the parish of Gore, in succession to the Rev. W. A. Hamblett, who takes charge of St. Matthew’s, Dunedin. Mr. W. S. Bedingfield, who has resigned his position as a member of the Petone Technical School Board of Managers, has been unanimously chosen out of six applicants for the office of teach-er-director of the school. A very old resident of the district, Mr. Peter Brophy, has died at Palmerston North, at the age of 86 years. He came to New Zealand from Ireland in 18-74, living in Taranaki and in the South Island, where he was engaged as a builder and contractor. He later removed to Palmerston North, where he Jived till his death.

News has just been received of the death at Friockheim, Scotland, of Mrs. Elizabeth Robertson, whose husband, the late Dr. Robertson, was a cousin of the late Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone. The deceased lady had several nephews and a niece in New Zealand, including Mr. D. A. Strachan, inspector of schools, Napier: Mr. S. Strachan, editor of the Westport News; Mr. R. Strachan, surveyor, Wellington, and Mrs. T. Andrews, of Roxburgh.

Sir Joseph Ward was asked at Christchurch whether he intended acceding to the many requests he was receiving to stand for a constituency at the general election. It was remarked that his name was being mentioned freely, particularly in connection with the Kaiapoi electorate. “I don’t want to see my friends taking a lot of trouble in connection with the seat, and though it is very kind of them, I have no intention of contesting it,” said Sir Joseph.
