FRENCH CHAMPION RETIRES. By Telegraph.— Pregs Asan.—Copyright Paris, August 14. Francois Charles, the French welter-weight champion, having exceeded the weight, has resigned the title, in accordance with French rules, qnd has designated Paul Brevieres his successor. THE WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP., DEMPSEY AND BRENNAN TRAINING. New York, August 14. A telegram from Michigan City, Indiana, states that while the State Governor has previously announced that he would not permit the Dempsey-Brennan fight on September 4, apparently the ban has been withdrawn. Kearns has announced the fight was positive. Both men have starred training. TARANAKI BOXING ASSOCIATION. MEETING GF THE COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee on the Taranaki Boxing Association was held on Tuesday evening. Mr. E. Jackson presiding. Tiie balance sheet of the last, tournament showed a profit of about. £26. The chairman said that the committee was t<» be congratulated on the manner in which th? recent tournament had been conducted. Everything passed off smoothly and the public were well satisfied with the programme provided. The “house” wan a record one, yet dosnite . that there was only a small profit. This showed that it was impossible for the committee Ho continue to put on bouts for large purses. This tournament had been held under most favorable conditions as regards weather, and also in having a big attraction in the Auckland-Taranaki football match. This seemed to show that the committee should restrict itii purees to a maximum of £lOO. Moreover, the bulk of the work in preparing the hall had been done by the committee, and it should be the aim of the conwnittee to have this done by hired labor. He paid a tribute to the excellent work done by several members of the committee, particularly mentioning Mr. Stephenson, who had done splendid work in connection with the arranging of the hall. It was also resolved to forward a letter of thanks and appreciation to Messrs. R. Inch and E. Repd, for work in connection with the flxing'*bf the ring and lighting, ?tc. The question of holding a tournament, on September 2, the night of the Hunt Club races, was discussed, and, it was resolved to recommend the match committee to endeavor to arrange a match between Whittome and Mike Flynn for £lOO, Including expenses, to carry the banfam championship. Failing these Madocks and Curran will be matched for the feather-weight championship. A sub-committee consisting of the match committee and Messrs. W. Richards and N. B, Howell was empowered to draw up a programme for the tournament.
