THE MALE CHOIR.

SOCIAL ENTERTAINMENT. The New Plymouth Male Choir are to be congratulated upon the success of their first social evening, which was heR! last night in the Workers’ Hall. The choir has never been heard to such advantage. Individual members sang with more confidence, and throughout the conductor (Mr. F. W. G. McLeod) held the singers comnletely under control. Their first number was the best, and was sung with a clear., rich tope, and well deserved the spontaneous encore. Other items were impress!velv rendered and enthusiastically received. Considering the short time the Melody Four has been in existence, their interpretation of Dudley Buck’s “In Absence" was excellent, and well merited the double encore. Other artists who assisted the choir were Miss Harper,, possessor of a pleasing soprano voice, who delighted her listeners with “The Moorish Maid” and May Breke’s touching melody, “Down Here.” Mr. W. G. Holder, a comedian of no mean and Messrs. R. H. Bartley and S. Cottier, who combined in an instrumental duet with exceptional ability, gave items which added to the enjoyment of the programme. During the evening the chairman, Mr. N. Fulton, on behalf of the choir, apologised for the imposition of the amusement tax, which had not been anticipated. He appealed for more solid support from citizens in the matter of honorary membership. Mr. McLeod also made some remarks regarding the choir, and outlined future plans. A short dance followed the close of the programme. the music being provided by *#4 Mr-
