SAFETY IN MINES.

PUKEMIRO CASES DISMISSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, August 14. Mr. Poynton, S.M., gave his reserved judgment in the action by the Inspector of Mines against Andrew Burt, manager of the Pukemiro Coal Company. Alleging that defendant allowed naked lights, other than locked safety lamps, to be used in the colliery, in contravention of the law. After pointing out the danger of coal dust and firedamp, Mr. Poynton said it was not sufficient that there was a possibility of a dangerous accumulation of gas, it must be “likely” to occur, and this had not been established. Both cases were dismissed.
