McMillan) presided. Spence, Coleman, Rutherfurd and Macabater wrote on behalf of T. E. Bridger, asking that the rent of T. E. Bridger’s premises in the municipal buildings be reduced. The Mayor moved that the request be turned down. Cr. Ward moved as an amendment that Bridger be allowed to present his case to the council. A division was taken on the amendment, the voting being even, and the Mayor giving his casting vote against it, the motion was carried. The Taranaki Education Board wrote stating that it could not recede from the position it had taken up with regard to their request that the electric Ueht poles be removed from the Technical High School grounds. The board asked that the poles be removed immediately. The Mayor said he thought the board should be asked to come to Stratford to view the grounds, when some arrangement might be arrived at. Cr. Jackson moved to this effect.* Cr. Ward said they had been “fooling around with the business” long" enough. In view of the Government’s warning that the bare wires should be attended to the council should go to work and remove the poles at once from the grounds where several hundred children were continually about. Cr. Cameron spoke in support of Cr. Jackson’s motion. The motion was carried. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., wrote with reference to the council’s communication regarding the town bridge and the fact that the abutments had been condemned by the Public Works Department. He had already interviewed the department, who were then waiting for further letters from the council. He would be pleased to make any further representations to secure the sympathy of the Government in the increased cost of the bridge.—Received. A petition was received asking the council to waive the by-law prohibiting vehicles from backing on to the kerbing. The petitioners stated that their vehicles were light and could not,do much damage. The by-law inflicted hardship, as it was necessary to carry goods a distance from the carts to the stores if they were not allowed to back up to the ketbing. The works committee recommended that the request be not acceded to and that the carriers be advised to carry shocks with them.—The recommendation was adopted. Cr. W. Mclnnes brought up the matter of planting trees in Miranda Street. He
thought there might be some fund which could bear the coat of planting the trees. He also suggested that each councillor ( might plant a tree in the street. The Mayor suggested that a small association of the local residents might be formed for the purpose of Having the street planted. The stock route should also be diverged from Miranda Street to Portia Street.—lt was decided to exclude stock traffic in Miranda Street between Regan Street and Pembroke Road. The works committee recommended that the Mayor’s action in terminating the gagement of Mr. Ross as manager and the appointing of R. Jenkins in his place be confirmed, and the report was adopted. T. I. Lamason applied for a permit to make temporary additions to his auction m art.—Granted. The electrical engineer reported that the following units had been generated during the month, a comparison with the corresponding month of last year: Hydro 23,320 (22,204); Diesel 20,777 (17,686); total 44/097 (39,890). Cr. Lawson complained of the state of Fenton Street and the footpath near the railway crossing. He described the footpath as a quagmire.—The Mayor said the Railway Department intended to provide a permanent crossing when the railway yard was regraded. The foreman was instructed to make temporary improvements to the footpath. It was decided to give a testimonial to the electrical engineer in connection with his services to the council, and, on the motion of Cr. Mclnnes, to place on record appreciation of Mr. Vicary’s services. The Mayor was instructed to proceed to Wellington to interview the Government with reference to the new bridge and the increased cost imposed by the condemnation of the two abutments by the Public Works Department. It was decided to inform the proprietor of Collins’ stables in Regan Street, that vehicles must not be parked in Regan Street, but must be removed to Miranda Street.
