ENTERTAINMENTS.

EMPIRE THEATRE. AN ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMENT. A most enjoyable entertainment was provided by the New Plymouth Ladies’ Lifesaving Society at the Empire Theatre last night. The programme included a number of physical culture exercises rendered in a manner which must have been as gratifying to the instructor (Mr. Eggleton) and his pupils as it was appreciated by the large audience present. The dances given by Miss Mamie Ellis and her pupils were equally appreciated, Miss Ellis’ execution of Montague Ring’s “Dawn” being as dainty as the title itself. Little Peggy MacDonald as Gollywog, and Miss K. Moyes as an Indian Sentinel, brought down the house. Perhaps the cleverest dance of the evening was the Torch Dance (from Henry VIII), with Misses Joyce Lili and V. Clegg m witches and Miss Ellis as “Fury.” The special stage effects for the dances, arranged by Mr. Rupert George, greatly assisted their interpretations. Recitations by . ' Mr. Hartman, songs by Mr. Frederic, and flute solos by Mr. Bosworth were very popular, as were the items rendered by the Savage Club Orchestra under the conductorship of Mr. F. W. D. McLeod.

His Worship the Mayor, in thanking, on behalf of the club, the various artists for the assistance given to the club, said chat although only formed last February, the members of the club took their duties very seriously. In addition to life-saving practices on the beach, they had established physical culture classes, with the excellent results seen that evening. They had been the mainstay of the St. John Ambulance first-aid classes during the winter, and were now forming tennis-courts for the benefit of their club. “New Plymouth can do with more clubs of this sort,” said his Worship, in conclusion, his opinion being heartily endorsed by those present.
