PROGRESS OF SPOTSWOOD.

BETTER FACILITIES WANTED. REQUESTS TO THE COUNCIL. A deputation representing the residents of Spotswood and the neighborhood waited on the New Plymouth Borough Council last night in reference to lighting and the roads in the district. Mr. D. J. Hughes was Ihe principal speaker and he presented a petition from some 53 residents asking for electrje lighting for their homes, while one or two would be glad of power for thetf milking machines. They recognised that they were outside the borough, but they had waited a long time and they considered that the suburbs should be> looked after before the more outlying parts. Mr. Hughes also asked that the main road to the borough boundary should be lighted. On Johnson’s Hill and Windy Point it was very dangerous, as on a windy night it was impossible to hear motor-cars coming and there hod been a few harrow escapes. He also drew attention to the need for side tracks. He •was very sorry to bring these matters up as they all meant money. He a *d for side-tracks on Johnson’s hill, particularly to the borough boundary. The fii.al point was the possibility of obtaining a ’bus service. They had many* people going in and out daily, and he thought a ’bus would pay. Replying to the deputation, the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) said that regarding lighting the borough could only extend the facilities to where it would give ths (best service; they could not extend in ah directions. The question of road lighting had been considered by th« council. They had no chance of get* ting a ’bus service; the borough had utf money to experiment with outaidj people. The Matyor added, regarding the petition for lighting, that it wai only a matter of time when the council would have to give consideration to claims of residents outside the borough.
