WAITARA.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the School Committe was held on Monday last, Mr. T. R. Ford presiding. The headmaster reported that the attendance last week was 350 out of 371, the best since the beginning of the year. Owing to the increase in grade of the school a six'th assistant has been appointed, Miss P. Hutchinson filling the position temporarily. This has allowed a better grouping of the classes to suit the accommodation of the rooms, although Standards 1 and 2 are still left with 105 pupils. Ten desks have recently been received from the board. As Arbor Day faces before the end of the month, an opportunity is given for the planting of shrubs and extending the live hedges. It was also suggested that a new agricultural plot be laid off on the Pariss Street side of the new tennis court. The technical classes for the country schools should be finished by the term holiday time, after which Standard 3 will have undisturbed possession of the building. The matter of procuring hedge plants and arranging the improvements to the boys’ playground was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. The board wrote stating that dental nurses would be available shortly to schools offering facilities. Tt was decided to enquire for further particulars, but the committee generally thought it would be a good thing to have a dental clinic. The chairman reported on the action he had taken in resisting the expenditure of such an amount of £2OO on the school building. It was resolved to write to the board asking them to forward the committee’s protest to the department immediately. GENERAL ITEMS. Members of the Chamber of Commerce accepted the invitation to view the New Plymouth hydro-electric scheme on Thursday last. A meeting of members of the Tikorangi Rowing Club is to be held for the purpose of winding up the club. The Waitara Tennis Club is proceeding with the erection of a pavilion in keeping with the improvements the club is making to their new grounds. Mr. C. Wickham is the designer and builder. Efforts are being made to raise a further £5O by way of debentures, the total outlay being estimated at £l5O.
