50,000 PERISH.

THE SWATOW CATASTROPHE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—CopyrJ«ht. Peking, August 9. It is only now possible to give some idea of the catastrophe at Swatow. A tidal wave carried everything before it. Ships parted from their anchors and were carried bodily a mile away and planted, on the land. One junk was driven right through the Asiatic Petroleum Company’s ,oil tank. The scene of ruin in the town is indescribable. No building withstood the raging gale, which twisted iron'’ girders as if they were wisps of straw. The harbor is choked with corpses, the stench from which, accentuated -by that of rotting rice and bean cake, is overpowering. New .York, August 10. The American, Consul at Swatow estimates that the typhoon casualties amount to 50,000. Over a hundred thousand people are homeless.
