EXPLOSION ON LINER.
SEVERAL OF CREW KILLED. VESSEL UNDAMAGED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. New York, August ’l. The Boston navy wireless received a call for assistance from the liner Adriatic owing to an explosion in the hold. Later the captain reported that he was able to proceed unaided. The ship is I*2oo miles from New York. Another message states that the captain wirelessed that two firemen were killed and one missing, and five trimmers and electricians seriously injured, through a bunker explosion. The vessel is not damaged. FIVE MEN DEAD. OTHERS MAY NOT RECOVER. Received Aug. 13. 5.5 p.m. New York, August 12. The deaths on the liner Adriatic now number five. Three of the injured are dying and two others are not expected to live to reach port.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. FIRE UNDER CONTROL. STEAMER NEARING PORT. Received August 13. 11.5 p.m. New York, August 12. As at an early hour this morning no further word had been received from the Adriatic, the White Star Line officials think the fire ie etill burning in the hold, though under control. The liner’s last report said she had resumed her voyage at full soeed and expected to dock at New York on Sunday.
