GOOD COMPETITION FOR SHEEP AND CATTLE. Dunedin, August. 9. All classes of sheep sold under keen competition at the Burnside sales ’to-day, and prices were fully 2s per head in advance) of last week's rates. The yarding was not a very large one, and consisted principally of wethers. There was 1 a. good demand for ewes, which were in short supply,. A small number of lambs were offered, and It being the last lamb sale of the season, there was very little demand. The bulk of the yarding was secured by graziers, and prices were lower to the extent of from 2s to 3s per head. There was a good yarding of fat cattle, and many pens contained animals of excellent quality. The market was very firm, prices being fully equal to, and in some cases higher, than those realised at Inst week’s sales. Pigs were also in short supply, hut competition was not very brisk, and prices were easier, both for baconers and porkers. There was a very small yarding of store cattle, and prices were a shade firmer.

Fat Cattle.—A 'medium yarding, 192 head being offered. There was keen competition, and prices were firm at the commencement, but eased, towards the close, finishing at 10s to 15s per head lower than last week. Prime ox bt«ef was worth 25s 6d to 27s 6d per 1001 b., medium quality ox 24s t(F 265, prime heifer beef 22s to 245, good cow beef 18s to 20s, inferior down to- 16s. Extra prime heavyweight bullocks realised up to £l4 15s, prime £ll 10s to £l2 108, medimmi £9 to £lO, light and unfinished sorts' from £7 to £B. Prime heifers realised from £6 10s to £7 10s, medium £5 to £5 10s, light and aged from £4 to £4 1(18. x

Sheep.—A medium yarding, numbering 1881 head. The yarding consisted mostly of wethers, a number of which were unfinished. Prices for priime sorts improved to the extent of Is fid to 2s per head, and unfinished sold at from par to a shilling advance. Prime heavy wethers sold at rates equal to 4’ z 4d to 4%d per lb., a few odd lines reached sd, ewes made 3d to 3%d. Extra prime heavy-weight wethers realised up to 41s, prime to 365, medium 20r to 225, light and unfinished sorts from 17s to 18s. Extra prime heavy-weight ewes realised up to 28s Kd, prime 21s to 235, medium 15s to 17s, light and aged from 12s to 14s. Lambs.—A small yarding, numbering 267 head. The quality was not of a very high standard. Butchers secured several pens, but the bulk of the yarding was taken by graziers. Prices were easier to the extent of 2s per head. Prime lamb made fid to 6%d per lb medium quality 6d. Extra prime lambs realised tip to 24s 9d, prime 18s to 20s, medium 16s to 17s, inferior sorts from 13s to 14s. Dairy Cattle.—-About fifty head were offered for sale. There was good competition, and satisfactory prices were realised. These ranged from £5 to £9 10s for best cows, and from £2 15s to £3 10s for two-year-old heifers. Store Cattle.—A small yarding was offered. With the exception of three-year-old bullocks, the yarding was of an inferior description. Prices on the whole were slightly firmer. Three-year-old bullocks made from £4 17s 6d to £5 per head. Pigs.—A medium yarding, for which competition was not very brisk. Prices were easier both for baconers and porkers to the extent of 5s and 7s 6d rspectively. Best baconers realised from 5%d to 6d per lb., and best porkers from 7d to 8d per lb. WAIKATO STOCK MARKET. The Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Co. Ltd., report:— l At Hamilton on August 8 we had a heavy yarding of cattle and an average yarding of sheep and pigs. Values for fat sheep seemed a trifle easier than last week, but in all cases a clearance was effected. Wethers made from 25s to 295, ewes from 23s to 23s 9d, hoggets from 19s to £1 Is, store hoggets were keenly competed for and advanced In value, .medium qu.uity making up to 17s, small from 14s 2d to 15s Id. A line of f.m. ewes in lamb realised 21s 9d. Beef was in plentiful supply, best steers reaching £lO 4s, medium weight £7 10s to £9, light to EG 2s, fat cows (best) making £7 17s, medium £3 12s 6d to £4 10s, steers in forward condition from £4 10s to £5 ss. Grown steers in store condition were cleared by private treaty afterwards, the best making from £3 12s 6d to £4 ss, smaller £2 15s to £3 ss, other small lots nf 2-year steers £1 Ils to £2 13s. Empty heifers were again easier, 2-year-old making to £3 10s, yearlings from £2 7s to £2 15s. Prices all round for pigs were easier than last week. Medium to heavy baconers £2 19s to £3 2s. good workers to light baconers £2 10s to £2 18s, medium porkers £2 2s to £2 Bs, light and unfinished 28s to 98s, slips 18s to 255, small and poor 8s to 15s, weaners made up to 15s.
