Captain S. A. Wheeler, M.C., who is at present in Masterton, will shortly take charge of the Y.M.C.A. in Nelson. He served with the British Army during the war.
A Roman Catholic newspaper, says a London cablegram, announces that Mr. G. K. Chesterton has joined the Roman Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Spratt, of Waihi Road, left Hawera by the mail train yesterday for Wellington. They will leave Wellington by the Ruapehu on a trip to the Old Country.
Mr. W. J. Melville, bailiff of the Hawera Magistrate’s Court, is . leaving shortly for Wellington on six months’ leave of albsence. Mr. R. J. Barrett, of Wellington, has been temporarily appointed to carry out the bailiff’s duties at Hawera.
The following have been nominated as - candidates for the vacancy on the New Plymouth Borough Council caused by the resignation of Mr. W. Rumball: Messrs. G. W. Browne (Vogeltown), F. J. Hill (Westown), and R J. Clarke (Workers’ representative). Mr. A. R. Davis (Te Henui), who had also been nominated, has withdrawn. The election takes place on Thursday, August 17.
