OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Methodist concert -•- evening was well attended. The various items, including glees, quartettes and dialogues, were very good. The instrumental items were very much appreciated. The appearance of the Oaonui orchestra was a sign that the need of an established orchestra is a much felt want in musical circles in this district. Mr. D. Markham has been appointed ■chairman of the Oaonui Co-operative Dairy Company. The shareholders cannot be blamed for anticipating good results from the new chairman. Mr. Markham was secretary of the Opunake and Oaonui dairy companies for some years, so he is well qualified to fill his new position. The Telegraph Department are renewing the poles and telegraph lines from Opunake to Hawera. The men employed appear to be a very competent staff, judging by the alert way the poles and fixtures are erected. There are no Government stroke methods with this party. The Opua Dairy Company is installing a butter-making plant. Hitherto this company manufactured cheese only. Delegates from this part of the Egmont electorate will visit Eitham next Monday to choose candidates to contest the political seat in the interests of the Liberal Party. It is reported that Mr. O. Cross’ farm has changed hands; also that a butchery business in this district had changed ownership. Many old residents regret the death of the late Mr. C. McGregor. Before taking up his residence in Rahotu ne had been identified with most of our local bodies.
On Wednesday a number of Maori footballers from the Waimate and Hawera district travelled to Rahotu to play the Maoris from this district-. The Maoris state that it is the intention of the Taranaki players to select a team to play the New Zealand Maori representatives. It is a challenge to include Taranaki players in the New Zealand Maori teams in future.
