GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. OPENING DAY’S RESULTS, BIG RACE TO OAKLEIGH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting opened to-day in fine weather, though a breeze blowing was rather keen. There was a very large attendance, including Lord and iLady Jellicoe. The latter presented the trophy accompanying the Grand National stake to C. Coleman, the trainer of Oakleigh. The totalisator investments were £68,387 10s, against £69,608 on the opening day last year. Results : TALLY-HO STEEPLES. —Ruddy Gold (R. M. Johnston) 1, Intolerance 2. Also started: Red Blaze (fell and broke a leg), Swindaska (fell), Moley (fell), Cremona and Runwell (lost their riders). Ruddy Gold came home bj’ himself. Intolerance ran off, but was brought back and then fell. He was mounted by J. Weir, rider of Moley, and gained second money. Time, 5 min. 3 2-5 sec. TRIAL HURDLES.—Passenger (A. McDonald) 1, Rowan 2, General Advance 3. Also started: Volo, Royal Exchange, Kareao, Nautical, Mandrake, Stray Shot. Won by three lengths, five lengths between second and third. Time, 3 mln. 14 sec. Also started: Coalition, Master Strowan (fell), Omahu (lost its rider), Waimai, Kohu (fell), Romance, Master Hamilton, Red Cent (lost its rider), Glenisla, Calma (fell). Won by six lengths, ten lengths between second and third. Time, 6 min. 55 1-5 see. Master Strowan jvas severely injured and had to be destroyed. ENFIELD STEEPLECHASE.—Staff Officer (A. A. Ellis) 1, Strathglass 2, Indus 3. Also started: Nlcomar, Dick (fell), Bill, Sartoline. Won by half a length, four lengths between second and third. Time, 3 min. 53 4-5 sec. WINTER CUP.—Bon Spec (C. Emerson) 1, Some Kid (J. Campbell) 2, Will Oakland (H. Young) 3. Bon Spec led all the and won by a length from Some Kid, who was a neck in front of Will Oakland. Time, 1 min. 41 sec. —a record for the race. AVONHEAD HANDlCAP.—Economist (A. E. Ellis), 1, L’Amour 2, Liquer 3. Also started: Sir Huon, Warhue, Yankee Dan, Birkenella, Pink Rose, Boniform, Lady Ben, Horatius, Orange Bitters, Gunlayer, Hands Off, North Inch, Killada, Balefire. Won by three lengths, two lengths between second and third. Time, 1 min. 28 1-5 sec. A protest against the winner on the grounds of interference with L’Amour was dismissed.

Officials were elected for the forthcoming season as follow: Judge, Christmas meeting, John Cameron (the appointment for the autumn meeting was held over) : starter, Christmas, J. Vincent, autumn, C. O’Connor; handicapper. H. Coyle; timekeeper, J. Bennett; clerk of scales, A. Goldwater; assistant clerk of scales, W. P. Nicoll; hon. surgeon. Dr. Fookes; hon. veterinary surgeon, R. B. Wood; clerk of the course, A. S. Thompson. Subcommittees were appointed as follows: Programme, Messrs. L. A. Nolan, A. R. Standish, Newton King, J. McLeod, B. H. and A. Alexander; farm, Messrs. L. A. Nolan, A. Alexander, O. W. Sole (a recommendation was made to the farm committee that more use should be made of the course proper as regards sheep) ; course committee. Messrs. L. A. Nolan, A. Pepperell In connection with an application for a trainer's license, and to Mr. D’Arcy George, in connection with a gentleman rider’s i certificate. A sub-committee was set up to go into the question of incorporating the club under the Incorporated Societies Act, ,and to report at a future meeting. The Racing Conference wrote relative to obtaining particulars of licensed jockeys attending at courses for the purpose of riding work. The information will be forwarded.
