Mr. Leslie H. Goddard, of Dunedin, has been appointed organist for the Hawera Presbyterian Church. A London cable message states that Lord Northcliffe is rapidly becoming weaker, and his condition is very grave. The Rev. Percy Batty, of Rotorua, has intimated his acceptance of an invitation, subject to tne approval of conference, to succeed the Rev. J. F. Martin as second minister in the New Plymouth Methodist circuit. The Egmont County Council yesterday decided to recommend Mr. R. Ferguson for appointment as a member of the Opunake Harbor Board, in succession to Mr. R. P. Malcolm, who has resigned. Mr. R. W. Dalton, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, will leave New Zealand for England by the Maunganui on September 12, and is not expected to return to New Zealand. For the time being Captain T. C. Fulton, M.C., will act as Officer-in-Charge of His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner’s Office.
At the Waverley Convent School last week, the pupils and friends met to bid farewell to Father Cahill, who has been appointed to the Lower Hutt parish, and to present him with a handsome gold fountain pen. The ladies also presented him with a travelling rug, and the Sisters with a shaving outfit. In the evening a further large gathering of friends took place at the school, when the congregation presented Father Cahill with a well filled purse of sovereigns.
An informal luncheon was tendered the Rev. R. B. S. Hammond, of Sydney, who is engaged- in the prohibition campaign, at May and Arrowsmith’s, New Plymouth yesterday. Mr. C. E. Bellringer presided over an attendance or about thirty ladies and gentlemen. Mr. Hammond spoke interestingly of his experiences in the United States, which he had visited expressly to study the effects of no-license, which, he declared, was an unqualified success, quoting figures and statements of business men, bishops, and ex'-publicans in support of his statement. In the afternoon the visitor was motored to the Northern Mountain House, afterwards proceeding to Hawera.-
