Permits for the use of wireless transmitting apparatus, which have been withheld by the Government since the war, will within a week or two, be issued to approved persons or institutions. A statement to this effect was made by Mr. | Shrimpton, Chief Telegraphic Engineer, to i Mr. R. Masters, M.P., and Mr. C. Ward, I manager of the King’s Theatre, Stratford, ! who waited upon the engineer in Wei- i lington on Wednesday. Air. Shrimpton : spoke enthusiastically and sympathetic- . ally on the subject and agreed to grant I to Mrs. Ward a provisional permit to transmit on a continuous wave generated by arc or valve. The Stratford Boy Scouts were also granted a provisional permit to transmit on 100 metres. These, it is understood, are the first transmitting permits to be issued to private persons in Taranaki since the war regulations were enforced. The policy of tlie Government with regard to transmission apparatus will be made public in the next few weeks.. There are hundreds of experimental stations throughout the country, but the usefulness ot these stations lias been considerably curtailed owing to the fact that they could receive but not transmit wireless messages.

THE GARRISON BALL. The garrison ball held in the Town Hall last night was a great success. There was a crowded attendance about 130 couples participating. The scheme of decoration in military style was effective,, there being an abundance of bunting ■ everywhere. A machine gun and piled arms on the stage, with bayonets arranged on the walls, enhanced the effect. Excellent music was supplied by Fox’s orchestra, and proceedings were conducted by C. S. M. Papps. Sergeant Vinsen, and Privates Malt, Boyde, Davey, and Court. The grand march was led by Lieut.-Colonel Cox and Mrs. Cox. A feature of the function was the supper effectively arranged by the Stratford Marble Bar Company. Visitors were present from New Plymouth and Hawera and all places between, and military uniforms were liberally sprinkled amongst the assemblage. The success of the ball should give the promotors no doubt about arranging similar functions in the future.
GENERAL ITEMS. Mr. Bert. Rawles, of Stratford, will leave Auckland by the Manuka on August 17 for a month’s holiday in Sydney. THE KING’S THEATRE. “GET RICH QUICK WALLINGFORD.” To anybodj’ who wants a two-hour laugh, the new Paramount picture, “Get Rich Quick Wallingford,” which will be screened at the King’s Theatre Stratford, commencing at the matinee to-day fills the bill completely. Notwithstanding its genuine humorous qualities, the picture has a heart appeal and a very strong plot. Frank Boraze created it. and will be remembered long for his work in that supreme classic Humoresque. Not a n'ttle of that vogue, elusive, “something” which made “Humoresque” stand out far above all others has been woven into “Get Rich Quick Wallingford.” Genius alone -could do it. and it has been done. The details of the scheme in this picture present enough complications to make the picture, interesting from first to last, and it is fillet! with amusing surprises for the audience. Tn addition to the above feature the Broadway comedy, “A Designing Husband.” also gazette, serial and comedy will bp shown. The prices remain as usual and the box plan is now open at Hwmphrey'a, book-seller and stationer.
