MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
NEW PLYMOUTH SITTING. Yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at New Plymouth was a rather busy one, the Court sitting at 10 a.m. in the morning and continuing, with a brief interval for lunch, till a few minutes after five. Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., was on the Bench. A first-offending Irishman, charged with drunkenness, introduced a little variety into the usual run of remarks in the Court by his “Indeed, b’ God, it’s the truth 1” He was profusely thankful when let off with a fine of 10s. Mich'ael Russell pleaded guilty, and was fined £1 and costs 7s, for being on licensed premises after hours. Arthur Henry Blane, who did not appear, was convicted and fined £3, with witness’s expenses 10s and Court costs 7s, for casting offensive matter in a doorway in Devon Street. BREACHES OF THE BY-LAWS. For infringing the borough by-laws regarding the speed limit, William Darragh was fined 30s and costs 7s, and Wilfred Rowe, £2 10s and costs 7s, while Dr, Thomson, Chas. H. Bridger and Charles Blake were each required to pay a penalty of £1 with costs 7s for breaches of the by-laws relating to the lighting pf vehicles. For allowing a cow to wander, George G. Calvert was fined 5s and costs 7s. DEFENCE CASES. The Defence Department hailed before the Court a batch of delinquents who had failed to attend parades at New Plymouth. Lieut. L. W. Andrew, V.C., stated that each of the accused had been sent a final notice to attend parade, and when they had failed to turn up had been asked if they could show reason why they should not be prosecuted. In most of the cases no notice bad been taken by the accused. Each of the following were fined 20s and costs 7s: Arthur William Blane, Clifford James Capon, John Francis, Thomas Harris, Harry Hartnell, William Lander, Douglas Lobb, and Richard O’Brien. Charles Ridson and Richard Truemann were convicted and discharged. and Edward James Rooke was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 7s. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given for plantiffs by default in the following undefended cases:--Richard Leslie Raynor v. T. Williams, £l9 (costs £3 Is) ; Newton King, Ltd., v. S. H. Alvis, £2 19s 6d (costs £1 10s 6<P ; George Gibson, v. J. J. Ritchie, £6 5s (costs 15s) ; Carpenters and Joiners’ Union v. F. J. Jones, £5 6s, judgment given for balance due, £1 6s (costs £1 3s) ; D. G. Morgan v. G. Bennett, £ll 12s lid (costs £3 2s).
