CARNIVAL WEEK.

PIERROTS’ CAMPAIGN CONTINUED. FOOTBALL MATCH AND The Pierrots’ campaign was actively continued yesterday, and if they are favored with fine weather for the remainder of the week the successful attainment of- their goal of LlOOO should be assured. The two attractions provided yesterday were a football match between Tukapa and Hawera at Pukekura Park in the afternoon and a community "sing” in the Coronation Hall at night. Both these functions were under the immediate control of the Sports Ground Committee and they had tueir arrangements well in hand.

THE FOOTBALL MATCH. Reports that had reached New Plymouth were to the effect that -Hawera were determined to turn the tables on Tukapa, and they gave an interesting display. Tukapa were not able to put their best team in the field and they misled Stohr and Hart, nevertheless in the first spell they put up a solid attacking game, though the visitors pressed them sorely in the second half. The game throughout was very open. Tukapa setting j the lead in the first spell, when they were quick to seize opportunities of throwing the ball about among their backs. Shortly after the commencement of the game a speculating kick rrom off the ground started a neat bout from Hooker to Brown and thence to Ennis and Marks, who was held up on the line. The next bright piece of play came when Hooker had a shot at goal: The ball fell short and there was a scramble to gain possession. Brown was successful and the leather travelled I per R. Oliver. Hooker and Ennis to ■ .Marks, who scored near the corner. Hooker’s kick failed and Hawera entered on an attack, carrying play to Tukapa’s line, where a pass to Sutherland enabled him to dash over. ‘Hooker was unfortunate in another shot at goal from a Tree kick, the ball striking the upright. At half-time Hawera were leading by 6 points to 3. The second spell must be given to Hawera, for from the commencement they maintained a solid attack and kept Tukapa on the defensive. Their forwards had been getting the better of 1 the -ball in the scrums and now their hacks got into action, Tukapa’s collaring was not too good, and this gave Hawera chances, of which they made good use. When near Tukapa’s line Fogarty got over after a short passing rush and later on Chadwick managed to struggle over from forward play on the home team’s line, Cameron converting. Tukapa’s efforts to break away were without avail, for Hawera quickly came back, and near the end of the game Purcell transferred to Wilkinson, who put in a good run. getting round near the posts. The shot at goal was unsuccessful, and the game ended in Ha were.s favor by 14 points to 3. Mr. -J. O'Grady was referee and there was a good attendance of the public. During the second spell Fogarty had to retire owing to an injury to his ankle sustained earlier in the game, and a short while afterwards Brown (Tukapa’s captain) had to be carried off, having injured a tendon in his foot.

COMMUNITY SINGING. Though the community singing in the evening was perhaps not so well attended as the previous ones, nevertheless there were enough people present to make a cheerful “sing” and the takings at the door were satisfactory. Mr. R. L. Cooper was again song leader, and, with the assistance of an orchestra comprising Messrs. Ward. Murphy, Deare and Taylor, soon had the audience wending* their way through the song sheet. Miss Hoskin, Miss A. White and Mr. E. Andrews were the soloists, and their renderings of the verses, while the audience joined in the choruses, added materially to the enjoyment of the evening. The result of the day’s effort will mean the addition of approximately £B7 to the funds, the football match producing £72 12s, TO-NIGHT’S ATTRACTION. The euchre party and dance, which Mr. R. Bennoch and his committee have arranged for to-night, should prove a bi o, attraction. The Coronation Hall will again be used, and as arrangements have been made to carry on euchre and dancing simultaneously there will be no lull in amusement. Messrs. Brcokman nd Flannagan. the Pierrots’ canvassers, have been energetic in filling their requisition for supplies for the supper and plenty of good things are assured. The Pierrots are asked to assemble at the Soldiers’ Club at 6.30. to don their crease paint and afterwards they will march in a torchlight procession, headed by the pipe band of the New Plymouth Caledonian Society, from the post office to the hall. The procession is timed to leave at 7.30.
