Colonel Franklin spoke to the Laecars in their own language and finally one of the natives helped Shepherd to rescue him. Received August 2, 9.5 p.m. London, August 1. At the Egypt enquiry, Sir Frank Notley, the company’© marine superintendent, gave evidence that Lascar© in an emergency required good handling. He agreed that it was essential that ! officers should speak the Lascars’ languages. The discipline on the Egypt as described in the evidence was bad, ■but it was difficult to believe all of it. He thought the discipline of the crew broke down in consequence of the suddenness of the collision and the ©hip’s enormous list.
