CREW OF A STEAMER.
TROUBLE OVER UNION VESSEL. IMPORTANT MATTER INVOLVED. ■—■— r By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. An agreement was arrived at between the Union Company and the Seamen’s Union regarding the engine-room complement of the Paloona. The Seamen’s Union asked that a clause —which the Union Company considered would have far-reach-ing results—which provided against any reduction being made in stokehold manning be inserted in ships’ articles. The Union Company refused to do this, but, in order to temporarily overcome the difficulty, an assuranoe was given to the Seamen’s Union that so far as the Paloona was concerned no alteration would be made in the present manning during the currency of the new articles. The men refused to sign the new articles on Saturday, but this afternoon they decided to sign on, pending consideration of the disputed clause by the Shipowners’ Federation of New Zealand. No alteration.is to be made in the manning of the Paloona during the currency of the new articles, and it is understood that the Shipowners’ Federation will meet to consider the matter within a few days. The crew commenced signing the articles at 2.30 this afternoon, and the Paloona left at 5.50 this evening for Dunedin, Lyttelton and Bluff, en route to Melbourne.
