SERIOUS FLOODS.
DAMAGE IN AUSTRALIA, A TOWN IN PERIL. HEAVY LOSSES FEARED. ' By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, July 31. Flood waters broke through the river banks into the main thoroughfare of Wagga-Wagga. Houses in the lower part of the street were invaded. If the waters rise another foot the centre of the town will be swamped. The water reached to within eight inches of the top of the Burrinjuck Dam on Saturday and then remained stationary. Received July 31, 8.50 p.m. Sydney, July 31. Flood waters are still pouring into Wagga-Wagga business houses and the main business centre is carrying up to four feet of water. Sandbags are being used in a futile endeavor to keep the water out. The Murrumbidgee River has now risen thirty feet, and there are indications that a tremendous body of water has yet to come down. The township of North Wagga-Wagga is entirely cut off, and the surrounding country submerged, causing heavy losses in stock and crops. The situation is disastrous, and threatens to rival in magnitude the big flood of 1900.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
Wagga-Wagga is situated on the bank of the Murrumbidgee, 73 miles from Albury. The population is about six thousand.
