■PREVENTION OF SPREAD. POSITION OF TARANAKI. . (Regarding cattle tick and the position in Taranaki, Mr. S. G. Smith has received the following letter frdm the Hon. W. Nos worthy (Minister of Agriculture) : - “With reference to your representations in connection with the cattle tick question in the Taranaki district. I have to inform you that clean area* such as Taranaki are adequately protected under the provisions of the latest regulations made under the Stock Act for the prevention of the spread of ticks among cattle. The area nearest to the Taranaki district is that known as ‘ the ‘B’ or buffer area, the boundary; of which its many miles distant to the north from the* crossing place at Mokau. Within the whole of area ‘B’ ticks have only been known to exist in very isolated instances and any person desiring to remove stock from that area to cl&in country is required to first obtain a permit from an inspector authorising their removal, and no permit -\ln be given unless the stock are absolutely ‘free from ticks. The inspector may, if. he considers necessary, require such stock to be dipped or otherwise effectively treated before issuing a permit for. their removal. It is not considered necessary that a dip should be erected at Mpkau as no stock can leave area ‘A’ unless dipped and declared to be free, and as Stated the requirements as regards stock from area ‘B’-adequately'meet the position without the necessity to have them dipped at Mokau.”
PRECAUTIONS AT THAMES. A specially-convened meeting of delegates from various local bodies in the district was held at Thames last week to consider preventing the spread of cattle tick, the county chairman, Mr. H. Lowe, presiding. It was decided to construct ‘ a dip at. Tapu, near the northern boundary of the Thames County, at the junction of the Coast Road, and Tapir-Coroglen track, as the most suitable site for blocking the pest from entrance into Thames Valley districts. It was considered that the dip could be constructed at a cost of about £450, and the allocation of cost to the different local bodies interested was agreed upon.
