A FARMER ARRESTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Napier, July 28. At the Police Court this afternoon Henry Ray Vercoe, a farmer, aged 38, was charged that on June 22, at Palmerston North, lie obtained from Annie Maud Tucker, a clerk in the Club Hotel, £lB by means of false pretences, a valueless cheque drawn on the Bank of New Zealand. Accused wa«s arrested in Napier thia morning. Counsel said accused had a. good explanation and that there had been an unfortunate mistake on the part of the prosecution. Vercoe was remanded on bail to Palmerston North. WELLINGTON GIRLS’ COLLEGE. Wellington, July 28. After a long controversy over a site and the expenditure of a considerable sum in levelling and preparing it for a second girls’ college, the board of governors, haa been informed that the project has been postponed indefinitely m the present financial position. It is considered the present buildings "are not unsatisfactory.” The chairman <x ■The-board expressed the opinion that it the junior high school scheme is proeeeded with it was quite likely they would never see a girls’ college there at all. CADET SHOOTING CUP. Wellington, July 28The challenge cup presented by Lady Islington to senior cadets was won this year by Scots College, Wellington. Nelson College was second, Wellington South (last year’s winners) third, Gisborne fourth and Morrinsville fifth. UNEMPLOYED IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, July 28. The funds raised for the unemployed are nearly exhausted so far as the City Council is concerned and a fresh appeal is being made. The council has 300 men at work, including 110 returned soldiers.
