CHRISTCHURCH’S MAYOR.
OPINION OF DEPUTY. “DOESN’T COUNT FOR MUCH." Christchurch, July 26. ‘Tie really does not count in the administration of the (•’. was the candid opinion about the Mayor of Christchurch. Dr. H- T. J. Thacker. M.P., expressed by Mr. J. A. Flesher, deputyMayor of the city, at a luncheon given to-day by the Christchurch Citizen* and Ratepayers’ Association. Mr. Flesher was taking about civic affairs. A voice: What about the Mayor? Mr. Flesher (disparagingly): Oh, he is always at it. The Mayor, you know, puts up his kite always to see how the wind is blowing. Then, if the wind is unfavorable, he pulls the kite down again. He does not stick at anything very long, especially if it is unpopular. He really does not count for much in the administration of the city to-day. You can beat him if you stand up to him. He is like an indiarubber ball — prick it with a pin and it will collapse. According to the Sun, this speech was delivered calmly by Mr. Flesher, as by a man not expressing opinions but merely stating facts.
