GIRL OUT OF CONTROL.
DEFIANCE IN COURT. “I WILL NEVER COME OUT.” ... A young woman of 18, named Ava Lillian Archibald, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court, on Friday, to answer a charge of escaping from the legal custody of the Salvation Army. Sub-Inspector McNamara explained that the girl was absolutely beyond control. She had run away several times from the army home. The Magistrate: “I think Point Halswell will be the best place for her.” “I don’t care where you send me, I will not stay,” defiantly declared the girl from the dock. "Why don’t you send me to my father, as I asked you?” His Worship: Because your father won’t have you. The Sub-Inspector: Her father is dead. The Accused: That’s a lie. My father is in Auckland, as I have letters to prove. His Worship: I’ll send you to Point Halswell for three months.
