DAIRY PRODUCE.
AN INSPECTOR IN LONDON. In the House, Mr. Masters (Stratford) asked the Government whether they would appoint a produce expert with commercial experience to be attached to the High Commissioner’s Office, who by keeping in close touch with the Home markets could give reliable up-to-date information to the dairy producers of the Dominion as to the state and prospects of the market, and thus enable them to reap the full prices of their products. (Note. —This question was asked because of the big difference between the prices realised by the producers in New Zealand and that received by the brokers at the present time.) Mr. Nosworthy (Minister of Agriculture) replied: The Government is at present going into the matter of the appointment of an expert officer with a good knowledge of both London and New Zealand business methods as inspector of New Zealand dairy products in the United Kingdom. His duties will be to report on the quality and condition of this produce. The National Dairy Association, of which practically all the North Island dairy companies are members, has a commercial man in London who advises his association’s Wellington office from time to time respecting markets and prospects. As the North Island exports about 86 per cent, of our dairy produce, the majority of the dairy companies are already represented by their commercial adviser in London.
