DISTRICT NEWS.

WHAREHUIA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At a recent meeting of the local hall board It was decided to hold what might be termed a “Home industries exhibition,” and gift auction, to raise funds for the furnishing of the hall. The shifting of the piano backwards and forwards from the school to the hall for every entertainment has always been very inconvenient as well as being a great deal of trouble, so to obliterate this proceeding the board think that perhaps enough money can be raised in the one day to purchase a piano also. The schedule will contain numerous sections, such as decorative, cookery, fancy work, vegetables and also a class for school work. An exhibition of this kind Is not complete without a few of the etceteras that accompany this kind of thing, such as afternoon tea. side shows, guessing competitions, and a whole host of others of interest to both young and old. Special cash prizes are being offered In several of the numerous classes, while for the cookery section a handsome cup has been promised for the exhibitor gaining the most points. A special clause in the rules of the exhibition is that all exhibits must he the bona flde property of the exhibitor. The board wisth this to he made generally known, as many are running under a bit of a false impression at present as regards the exhibits. August 31, which is the date fixed for the exhibition, is now being looked forward to with keen interest by many a nimble house wife who is anxious to show her cooking or sewing abilities, while the single young ladies think it is a golden opportunity to show the bachelors what they really can do.

For the last three weeks the question of the hour in most of the homes around here has heen thnt of fancy dress. Every home seoms to be full of excitement preparing for the forthcoming plain and fancy dress, masquerade ball, which is to be held in the social hall on Friday evening, the 23th. Many will remember the last ball of this kind held in the schoolroom two years ago, and the manner in which the seating accommodation was taxed, it being one of the largest functions ever held in the school, but this time we have the hall with one of the best floors for miles around and it is being specially polished for the ball, so a record crowd is anticipated. Good prizes are being given for the best, ladies’ and gents’ costumes. The supper and music will both bo of the best, the former hv a well known caterer, while the latter is being supplied by Mrs. Bianchi's orchestra.
