WASTE AT THE HARBOR.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l have noticed for some time in your paper, people who are dissatisfied with the construction works going on at Moturoa port, especially the manner in bringing the stone down from the Paritutu quarry. Well, Sir, and no wonder, considering the style of hauling the stone for the reclaiming works. Our grandfathers would have done it quicker with bullock waggons. In the first place, that bridge should have been put where no haulage would be necessary. The only haulage required would be from the face of the quarry to the top of the incline. The line as it exists now, without the bridge at present there, will still continue to feed the breakwater. At present tlie haulage is from the face of the quarry to the top of the incline, and when the load is at the bottom an engine is hooked on until the load is pushed across the points to suit the present over-head bridge. The load is then hoeked on to another engine or winch to taka
the load over the bridge. Just imagine the waste of money and time. It could be done without all that money and time wasted. A track cut in the face of the hill behind the old mining house, continuing on behind the present, work shops, then the overhead bridge still on the down grade, until it reaches the foreshore. To form thnt track would not he costly compnred with the other system, the only machine needed would be a winch at the top of the incline to break or lower the full ones down the incline, they in turn pulling up the empty trucks, only two men being needed. Compare this with the other style, and any one with ideas of haulage would condemn the old system ns out of date and as a waste of money. In fact, Sir, it is the same old thing over again—blundering all the way through.—l am, etc., ANTI-WASTE. Waipuku, July 24.
